You may not know the name Eckerton Hill Farms. But if you know the names Babbo, Daniel, Union Square Café, and Bouley, you know a few of the restaurants who depend on their farm for dozens of varieties of heirloom tomatoes.
If the name does ring a bell, it might be because of the farm's longtime presence at the Union Square Greenmarket, where their wares are so popular they often sell out before noon. Tim Stark, the man behind the 'matoes, can often be found behind the table dispensing opinions along with his produce. When he's not rhapsodizing about tomato varieties like Green Zebras, Cherokee Purples, White Wonders, and Brandywines, he's tending to their welfare on Eckerton's Lenhartsville, PA farm. Somewhat less famously, Eckerton grows chili peppers with a variety and flavor that's rumored to rival their tomatoes.
