It’s stone fruit season—and it’s short-lived so get in on this fast! So what the cherry plumcot is a stone fruit anyway? Simply put, it’s a fruit with edible flesh that encloses a stone or shell. They come in hybrid varieties too, which our partners at Family Tree Farms have blended together into fruits that are jam packed with intense flavors and will make your summer fruit salads positively sing! Read more to learn about this season’s top picks.
Plumcots and apriums are not your average stone fruits. Plumcots are actually a non-GMO hybrid fruit carefully cross-pollinated between plums and apricots, while apriums are a hybrid fruit with a higher percentage of apricot characteristics. It’s the best of both worlds!
So how exactly were these bigger and juicier hybrids created? In order to grow the most flavorful fruit on the planet, our California-based friends at Family Tree Farms traveled to all four corners of the globe to partner with some of the world’s most-esteemed plant breeders and secure the exclusive rights to grow 150 hand-picked varieties.
By picking their produce at a higher level of maturity, Family Tree Farms is able to create some of the most delicate and flavorful fruits in the world while continuing to invest in discovering newer, exciting varieties.
Check out our guide to what you should try this summer below:
If you like plums…
Plumcots and plumograntes are juicy with a sweet, jam-like flavor. These little flavor explosions can dress up a simple dinner salad or make a great afternoon snack. They have a relatively short window of availability, about three weeks, and each variety has its own unique appearance and flavor.
If you like apricots…
While apriums have the exterior appearance of an apricot, the flavor has perceptible plum qualities and a firm yet juicy flesh. Your apriums will arrive firm and soften in 3–5 days at room temperature, so plan ahead. You can also speed up the ripening process to 2–3 days by storing them in our complimentary ripening bag. When they yield to gentle pressure, they’re ready to eat.
If you like nectarines…
Nectapies are the latest trend in peaches and nectarines. This group of fruit is naturally flat and donut-shaped with rich, succulent yellow skin and layers of complex flavors that enhance the perfect balance of sugar and acidity.
If you like peaches…
The white donut peach and peach pie have a unique squashed look but a deep, sweet flavor. With an intense peachy taste, a lovely yellow skin, and a small pit, once you taste one, you’ll never judge a peach by its cover again.
Each variety has a seasonally short availability window, so make sure to order yours while they’re still here!
