It all began in a yellow truck.
Back in 2008, Van Leeuwen co-founders Laura, Ben, and Peter set out to revive the classic American ice cream truck on the streets of New York City. The idea was simple: Make delicious ice cream using fresh, natural ingredients and sell it to passersby. And it worked a treat. Literally.
When our ice cream expert (yes, we have ice cream experts), Justine, first tasted Van Leeuwen, she knew immediately that she had to make room for it in her department. “The moment I tasted the Sicilian pistachio flavor I was hooked,” says Justine. “I’m truly amazed at how much attention they pay to every detail. They make all the add-ins from scratch, including cookies, cake, and cashew milk.”
And not only are all the ice creams made from scratch, but Van Leeuwen sources its ingredients from both near (Hudson Valley milk) and far (Fijian ginger). So, if you like your ice cream artisanal (like us) then Van Leeuwen is guaranteed to please your palate. We’re talking ingredients like biodynamic single-estate Ceylon cinnamon, hand-picked Bronte pistachios from Sicily, and Fair Trade organic coffee beans grown in the shade of the Andean foothills. Even the vanilla is made from barrel-aged organic cold ground Tahitian beans.
Justine also believes that Van Leeuwen’s vegan flavors are best-in-class. By using a combination of cashew and coconut milk, they achieve an out-of-this-world creamy texture.
Now, we know mama always said that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but Van Leeuwen’s packaging is the most beautiful we’ve seen in a very long time. Its light pastel colors and curly font bring to mind 1950’s ice cream parlors. But what we love most about any ice cream is that it’s always in season. And Van Leeuwen is a sweet treat than needs no dressing up. Just scoop it right out of the tub and enjoy—no toppings required.
