Jägermeister herbal liqueur is a blend of 56 ingredients. Curt Mast, the liqueur's creator was a passionate hunter and dedicated his new recipe, with its combination of only natural ingredients and pure alcohol, to the hunters and their honorable traditions. He imagined his mixture of herbal extracts and pure alcohol to prelude and conclude every hunting trip — a toast to the spirit of hunters — hence the name Jägermeister which means "hunting master" in German. Some of the key ingredients are ginger root, whose full-flavored essential oils are behind much of the spiciness in the finished drink; cinnamon sticks, whose flavor is familiar to all from a range of sweet dishes and warm festive drinks; star anise, one of the four clearly identifiable flavors in both the aroma and the taste of Jägermeister; green cardamom, the queen of spices, with its delicate, aromatic sweetness and fresh, flowery flavor; and orange peel. There are 445 oak barrels in Jägermeister's cellars — Jägermeister is given time to breathe, slowly ageing for nearly one year before bottling. During the maturation process, our master distillers continually inspect the progress until the necessary complexity is achieved. The Jägermeister taste is mildly spicy, complex and soul-warming: Well-balanced traces of citrus, ginger, star anise are accompanied by a pleasantly bitter herbal flavor. (from the distiller)
