M. Chapoutier La Bernardine Châteauneuf du Pape

No name is more closely associated with the greatness of the Rhône valley than M. Chapoutier. The history of the Chapoutier family stretches back to 1808. Since he took over the estate in 1990, Michel — a wine icon in his own right — has revolutionized his family's winery and the Rhône Valley wine industry. Innovations introduced by him have included: 100% biodynamic viticulture, aggressive vineyard management, vintage dating for all the estate's wines, and the elimination of fining and filtration. Châteauneuf–du–Pape is known for its amazing soil, composed of large rolled stones from the bed of the Rhône River. These stones hold the heat of the day's sun and warm the vines in the brisk evening air. Chapoutier's La Bernardine is quite unique in that it is made up of only three grape varieties when 13 are allowed by AOC law. With this unique approach and the low–yield of his vineyards, Chapoutier produces a rich, flavorful wine with moderate tannins. Intense crimson red in color, this wine presents the complex, subtle aroma of blackcurrant and plum layered with roasted coffee, cinnamon, and black cherry. Full–bodied spicy flavors of licorice, black cherry, and red fruit dominate the palate; the finish is rich and structured. Enjoy with roasted lamb, braised rabbit, steak with mushrooms, and strong cheeses. (from the vintner)
