What We Do

Sustainable Seafood

What is sustainable seafood?
It's seafood that's managed and fished in ways that support healthy fish populations and healthy ocean environments so that we can all enjoy seafood for years to come.

Here are two of the key issues to consider:

  1. Overfishing: when too many fish are being caught and populations aren't able to replenish themselves
  2. Environmental impact: when the way a fish is caught (wild) or managed (farmed) has a negative impact on marine plants, animals, the environment or other fish.

How do your rankings work?
The FreshDirect seafood sustainability ratings provide six color-coded fish icons to help give customers easy access to sustainability information. The blue "On the Path to Sustainability" rank is a designation given by FreshDirect (learn more about that in Question 3). The remaining five fish icons — from Dark Green to Red — correspond to rankings provided by the Blue Ocean Institute.

Tell me more about the "On the Path to Sustainability" rating.
When we give a fish the blue "On the Path to Sustainability" rating, that means we've made site visits or that we have documentation to support the claims on sustainable practices. It's our way of being able to give credit to suppliers who demonstrate that they are taking steps in the right direction.

For example, some of our best practice suppliers include fish that's been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Certification Council; or fish from artisanal producers vetted by the CleanFish Alliance; or fish with a strong sustainability program such as Australis Barramundi or Local Ocean Royal Dorade.

Who are the Sustainability Experts you work with to determine your rankings?
We work closely with sustainability experts at Blue Ocean Institute, and in large part use their science-based rankings in our sustainability ratings.

I see some fish aren't ranked. Why is that?
We aim to seek out credible sustainability information where it is available. If it's not available, we are unable to provide a rank.

Some reasons may include: the specialty nature of some items means that robust sustainability information may not be available for them; or work may be underway but not yet completed to learn about the sustainability of a fish. Either way, we'd like to feel confident in a ranking before sharing it with customers.

Who do you work with to learn about sustainable seafood?
We continue to work with a number of expert organizations to learn as much as we can about sustainable seafood. They include:
  • Blue Ocean Institute
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • Environmental Defense Fund
  • FishChoice

Why do you sell red-listed fish?
We believe in education and choice for our customers. While we're working toward sourcing more sustainable fish options for our customers, we hope to give customers the information they need to make the right decision for them.
