SALMON EXPLAINED

KNOW YOUR KING FROM YOUR COHO

The summer months mark the short season of wild caught Alaska salmon and for seafood lovers, it's the best time of the year.

In Alaska, sustainability is not just an idea but a governing principle that defines the wild season.

Every year, millions of salmon travel thousands of miles from the open ocean up the rivers of southern Alaska to spawn and complete their life-cycle; the key is to ensure enough fish make their way upstream to create plentiful new populations for generations to come.

Thanks to advanced radar technology and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the salmon are counted hourly to track how many reach the top of the river. Fishing areas are restricted as well as the hours these boats can fish for, which change daily at the discretion of Fish and Game.
