A truly unique rice-based whisky from Japan's Kyushu Island for lovers of sherry cask finished Scotch.
Founded in 1872, Ohishi is the closest distillery to the source of the Kuma River, one of the three fastest flowing in Japan, which is renowned for its superior water quality. The historic distillery creates their whiskies from malted and unmalted rice instead of the traditional malted barley. 30% of the rice is gohyakumanishi which is grown in their own fields using an organic farming method that involves the use of koi carp to control weeds. They combine it with a mochi rice from Kumamoto Prefecture as a main ingredient.
After distillation, the whisky is matured in first-fill sherry casks. The soft silky texture of the rice whisky presents a beautiful canvas for the big raisin, fig, and oak spice notes of the sherry cask. A medium to deep mahogany colored whisky with aromas of dried dark fruits, leather, brown sugar, and spice. This full-bodied whisky is very soft and easy to drink with balanced flavors of vanilla, citrus fruit, cloves, and an alluring sweetness. It has a long finish with dark stone fruit, spice, and cocoa notes. (from Ohishi)
