1. Monterey Bay Aquarium — Seafood Watch Program

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program helps consumers and businesses make choices for healthy oceans. Our recommendations indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid." Seafood Watch raises consumer awareness through our pocket guides, website, mobile applications and outreach efforts. We encourage restaurants, distributors and seafood purveyors to purchase from sustainable sources.

Seafood Watch recommendations are science-based, peer reviewed, and use ecosystem-based criteria. Since 1999, we've distributed tens of millions of pocket guides, our iPhone application has been downloaded more than 240,000 times, and we have close to 200 partners across North America, including the two largest food service companies in the U.S.

2. Blue Ocean Institute

From Arctic Alaskan fishing villages to Zanzibar's shores, the staff of Blue Ocean Institute studies and articulates how the ocean is changing and how everything humans do — both on land and at sea — affects the waters, wildlife, and people of our world. But gloomy environmental warnings and predictions don't move people to make changes that can help our shared ocean. MacArthur Prize-winning scientist/author Dr. Carl Safina and Mercédès Lee created Blue Ocean Institute in 2003 as a unique voice of hope, guidance and encouragement.

Blue Ocean Institute is the only conservation organization that uses science, art and literature to inspire a closer bond with nature, especially the sea. We translate scientific information into language people can understand and use to make better choices on behalf of the sea. Whether you're a fisherman, seafood lover, student, faith leader, parent, artist or chef, our programs help you learn how and why you should protect our planet's life-giving ocean.

3. New England Aquarium — Sustainable Seafood Programs

Founded in 1969, the New England Aquarium is a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation that is redefining what it means to be an aquarium: combining education, entertainment and action to address the most challenging problems facing the oceans. They are a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation and are the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment.

The New England Aquarium's Sustainable Seafood Programs promote ocean-friendly seafood, encourage the responsible management of our fishery resources and provide support to regional and international fishing communities, industries and organizations. The Aquarium is working with the seafood industry to encourage the development of ocean-friendly aquaculture and wild-caught fishery operations.

5. Marine Stewardship Council

The MSC is the world's leading certification and ecolabelling program for sustainable seafood. Look for the blue MSC ecolabel when shopping or dining out. The MSC runs an exciting and ambitious program, working with partners to transform the world's seafood markets to a sustainable basis. With experts we developed standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. They ensure that MSC-labelled seafood comes from, and can be traced back to, a sustainable fishery. The MSC meets the highest benchmarks for credible certification and ecolabelling programs, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization guidelines and the ISEAL Code of Good Practice.

6. Aquaculture Certification Council

Aquaculture Certification Council, Inc. is a nongovernmental body established to certify social, environmental and food safety standards at aquaculture facilities throughout the world. This nonprofit, nonmember public benefit corporation applies the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices standards in a certification system that combines site inspections and effluent sampling with sanitary controls, therapeutic controls and traceability.

Part of ACC's mission is to help educate the aquaculture public regarding the benefits of applying Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and the advancing scientific technology that directs them. By implementing BAP standards, program participants can better meet the demands of the growing global market for wholesome seafood produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

7. FishChoice

FishChoice.com is the first ever business-to-business online seafood sourcing tool that lists seafood products that meet the sustainability criteria and/or are certified as sustainable by globally respected environmental organizations. Sustainable seafood, as defined here, is fish and shellfish that is caught or farmed in ways that maintain healthy populations, have minimal impact on the environment, and are managed effectively. FishChoice.com connects buyers and sellers of sustainable seafood.

All the seafood products featured on the FishChoice website meet the favorable sustainability rating and/or certification criteria of at least one of our sustainable seafood partners. FishChoice itself is not a seafood rating or certification program; we simply take the criteria and apply it to matching seafood products. FishChoice.com is designed to assist commercial seafood buyers looking for suppliers of sustainable seafood products.
