According to the FDA and EPA, pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers and young children should avoid eating fish that contain high levels of mercury — usually larger, predatory fish.
- The FDA, EPA amd New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) advise against eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish
- In addition the DOHMH advises against eating Chilean sea bass, grouper, mackerel (King or Spanish), marlin, orange roughy and tuna (fresh, steaks, sushi)
- All groups encourage the consumption of fish and seafood that are lower in mercury
