How To Make A Bread Bowl

Miki Kawasaki · February 18, 2021 ·

When you serve your soup in a bowl made out of bread, it goes from simple to soul-soothingly satisfying in an instant.

To make one, all you need to do is pick your soup, hollow out one of our sourdough boule breads, heat it up, and then get spooning! And when it’s all done, you’ll have a loaf that’s soaked through with deliciousness.

We’ve outlined the basic steps below. Shop the ingredients here on FreshDirect.

How To Make A Bread Bowl For Soup

Let your sourdough boule(s) thaw, either 2 hours at room temperature or overnight in the fridge—you’ll need 1 boule per person.

When ready to assemble, preheat the oven to 400 F. Make a horizontal cut 1/2 to 1-inch below the top of the boule. Using your fingers, press the center of the boule into the sides to create a bowl shape. Tip: You can use the leftover bread top to make cheesy croutons for your soup.

Place the boule on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until completely warmed through, 15-17 minutes. Warm up your soup, then pour it into the toasted boule and serve, adding any croutons, chopped herbs or other toppings if you want. Make sure to enjoy the soaked bread after the soup is gone!
