Love Local: Long Island Partners On FreshDirect

Fresh Direct · May 31, 2022 ·

It’s no secret that Long Island is a food-lover’s paradise, home to farms, fisheries, and artisan goods makers in numbers dizzying for such a narrow stretch of land. Small businesses reign here, and at FreshDirect, we’ve cultivated personal relationships with many local producers who bring us their very best.

Leafy greens at Deer Run Farms

On principle, we believe in investing in local food ventures because this not only contributes to a more sustainable food system and upholds independent businesses, but also because food simply tastes better when it’s made locally. So it’s truly fortunate that FreshDirect is able to draw from this network and connect our customers to impassioned producers and goods that arrive at the peak of freshness.

In addition to being deeply connected to Long Island’s artisans and purveyors, FreshDirect is embedded in its towns and communities. We offer seasonal grocery delivery to the Hamptons, Montauk, North Fork, and Shelter Island, so its easy to enjoy the best of the region while you’re spending time out east. We also have 2-hour alcohol delivery from FreshDirect Wines & Spirits for when it’s time to kick back and relax. For more information on seasonal delivery, head to the Delivery Info page on our website.

FreshDirect’s Long Island partners are an integral part of our offerings and we want our customers to know why they’re so special. Read on to learn more about these producers and find their one-of-a-kind items on our site.

Channing Daughters Winery

Spanning 25 acres of vineyards, Channing Daughters Winery is perfectly located at the center of the South Fork for cool Atlantic breezes to dance through the grapevines, creating conditions ideal for bountiful harvests of fascinating grape varieties. Their Scuttlehole Chardonnay is a FreshDirect staff favorite.

Deer Run Farms

Deer Run Farms is a family-run farm in Brookhaven, Long Island that grows some of the most luscious greens we’ve ever tasted. We’re on a first-name basis with farmer and owner Bob Nolan, and thrilled to help support his farm by selling Deer Run lettuce, spinach, cabbage, and kale directly to you.

Great Gun Shellfish

Great Gun Shellfish is raising some of Long Island’s best-tasting oysters, which have a sharp brine up front that leads to a sweet, buttery finish. Working with marine scientists from Stony Brook University, Great Gun is at the forefront of responsible oyster farming, contributing greatly to the sustainability and health of the waters along the Fire Island National Seashore.

Montauk Brewing Company

What started in 2012 as a basement brewing operation among longtime friends has grown to embody the spirit of Montauk. All of Montauk Brewing Company’s beers honor a homegrown sense of adventure and an active lifestyle, as well as the simple pleasures in life. Their red brew-barn is just steps from the surf—right where it belongs. There, you can come as you are and celebrate the no-frills good life at New York’s easternmost brewery.

Satur Farms

Situated on the North Fork of Long Island, Satur Farms is dedicated to growing the finest vegetables and culinary ingredients. Owned by the husband and wife team of Eberhard Müller and Paulette Satur, the farm has a steadfast commitment to sustainable farming and specializes in leafy vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, root vegetables, and herbs.

Wells Homestead Acres

The Wells family has been farming the same land in Aquebogue, Long Island since 1661. When farmland is passed down through generations, it’s not only the property being inherited; it’s a priceless 350-year wisdom of the land that ensures the crops will thrive. The Homestead’s produce is widely regarded as some of the finest in the Northeast.

Wölffer Estate Vineyard

Perched on a rise overlooking lush vineyards to the east and the gently rolling Hamptons landscape to the west, Wölffer Estate Winery is unquestionably one of the most beautiful on Long Island. Their elegant sparkling dry rosé cider is made from New York State apples and every single sip tastes like summer.

What you'll need:
1 - 8 ounce Norwegian salmon fillet, skinned, deboned and divided into two 4 ounce fillets
½ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon ground coriander
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
¼ teaspoon fresh cracked pepper
¼ cup honey
½ teaspoon sambal
1 tablespoon sliced red or green chilies

What you'll do:
1. In a heavy bottom sauce pan over medium high heat, add honey, sambal and chilies. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove pan from the heat and set aside. The longer the honey sits the more flavor the chilies release.
2. In the meantime, pat salmon dry and season with salt, coriander, smoked paprika and fresh cracked pepper.
3. Add oil to a cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Once the oil is hot, add salmon to the pan, presentation side down.
4. Cook the salmon for four minutes; flip and cook for another three minutes. Top salmon with glaze while in pan, to coat each filet.
5. Transfer to serving plates, top with more chili sauce, serve with brussels sprouts or your favorite vegetable, if desired.
