Chili Mango Margaritas For Cinco de Mayo

Fun fact: almost half of all drinks ordered on Cinco de Mayo are margaritas. May 5 also happens to be around the start of peak mango season, so it’s time to put the tropical fruit in everything. Take advantage of both occasions by pouring yourself and an amigo a batch of these frosty mango margaritas with a surprise spicy kick.

A perfectly ripe mango will bring all the sweetness you need to this drink, so we recommend a flavorful variety like the Champagne mangos from Ciruli Brothers. These fruits are a special breed of the yellow Ataulfo mango, a variety first cultivated in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. They have a smooth, fiberless texture and concentrated, honey-like taste, which is perfect for balancing out the tangy lime juice and floral-nosed tequila in the cocktail.

To double down on the mango in this recipe, we’ve also added a splash of De La Calle chili mango tepache, a bubbly probiotic drink made from fermented pineapple. It not only rounds out the sweetness and the spice, but also gives the margarita that wonderful slushy consistency.

Lastly, you could opt for the classic salt rim here, but swapping it out for Tajín, the fiery-tart spice blend, really takes things up a notch. It has the sort of zing that grabs your attention and gets you fired up for a Cinco de Mayo full of tacos, guacamole, and fiesta-ing.

What to do:

Place Tajín seasoning on a plate. Halve the lime, then rub one of the cut sides over the rims of two tumblers. Dip the rims into the Tajín and set aside. Squeeze the juice from the lime.

Slice down the sides of the pits inside the mangos and remove the flesh in chunks. Place in a blender, along with the lime juice, tepache, tequila, and Grand Mariner. Blend on high until smooth.

Add the ice and continue blending until thick and frosty. Pour into prepared glasses and serve.
