What is a food allergy?
A food allergy occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless food protein, the allergen, as a threat and then fights the food allergen by releasing histamine and other chemicals which triggers an allergic reaction. Any food is capable of causing an allergic reaction, but eight foods have been identified as accounting for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the United States. These foods or food groups have been deemed as the "major food allergens" and include eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, soy and wheat.
How will I know if a product contains an allergen?
All FreshDirect products are labeled in accordance with the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA), which requires that labels of food products containing the eight major allergens be declared clearly and in plain English. Many of our product labels also include a facility disclaimer to advise our customers of the potential for cross contamination of allergens in our production facility.
How does FreshDirect handle allergens during production?
FreshDirect maintains good manufacturing practices and uses the best practices possible to prevent allergen contamination. Many of our product labels include a facility disclaimer to advise our customers of the potential for cross contamination of allergens in our production facility.
